What is Vertebral Compression Fractures?

A vertebral compression fracture occurs when a weakened vertebral body collapses, most commonly from osteoporosis, and sometimes after minor trauma. The result is sudden back pain, loss of height, and in some patients a progressive stooped posture.

Many fractures heal with bracing and pain management. For persistent, disabling pain, kyphoplasty — a minimally invasive procedure that stabilizes the fractured vertebra with bone cement — can provide rapid relief and restore vertebral height. Dr. Varma coordinates bone-health evaluation alongside treatment to reduce the risk of future fractures.

Common symptoms

Sudden onset of back pain, often after minimal strain
Pain worse with standing or walking, eased by lying down
Gradual height loss or stooped posture
History of osteoporosis or long-term steroid use

Why it happens

When bone density falls — most often from osteoporosis, sometimes from long-term steroids or malignancy — the vertebral body can collapse under everyday loads: a cough, a misstep, lifting a bag. Each fracture increases the risk of the next as posture pitches forward.

How it is diagnosed

X-rays show the collapse; MRI distinguishes a fresh fracture (which causes pain and responds to treatment) from an old healed one, and screens for other causes. A bone-density scan quantifies the underlying osteoporosis.

Treatment options

Many fractures heal over 6–12 weeks with bracing, pain control, and activity modification. For persistent disabling pain, kyphoplasty stabilizes the vertebra with cement through two tiny incisions — often with rapid relief. Every patient also receives bone-health treatment to prevent the next fracture.
